The National Student Financial Aid Scheme – NSFAS Application 2025 has officially announced that applications for the 2025 academic year will open on 20 September 2024. This was confirmed on 13 September 2024, giving students across South Africa the opportunity to start preparing their documents and details for the application process.
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme is committed to providing bursaries and loans to eligible and deserving students who require financial assistance.

Before the Nsfas application 2025 portals open on 20 September, it is important to know whether you qualify to be an applicant.
To be eligible for Nsfas funding, applicants must be South African citizens, be registered or intending to register at a public university or Tvet college.
Applicants should also come from a household with a combined income of not more than R350 000 per annum, and meet the academic requirements of their chosen institution.
Additionally, applicants must not have previously received Nsfas funding.
Applicants seeking financial assistance for postgraduate studies will not be considered.
“As of the 2021 academic year, Nsfas will no longer provide funding for postgraduate courses.
“This includes postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas, honours degrees, master’s, and PhD degrees,” Nsfas announced on its website.
However, it encouraged students funded in their undergraduate years to apply through the National Research Foundation (NRF).
Students with disabilities are also encouraged to apply.

What You Need to Apply
For NSFAS application 2025 funding, students will need to meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Be a prospective or current student registered at a public university or TVET college.
- Have a combined household income of no more than R350,000 per year.
- Students with disabilities may qualify with a household income of up to R600,000 per year.
Additionally, students who have already obtained a qualification through NSFAS funding will not be eligible for funding for a second qualification.
Required Documents
Make sure to have the following documents ready for your NSFAS application 2025:
- A certified copy of your ID.
- Your parents’ or guardian’s ID copies if they are supporting you.
- A valid cellphone number and email address.
- Proof of your household’s income, such as pay slips or affidavits (if unemployed).
