Sasolburg Town History

Established in 1954 to accommodate SASOL employees, Sasolburg has grown into a thriving community. The city is divided into three main areas: Sasolburg proper, Vaalpark, and Zamdela. While most white residents speak Afrikaans, the majority of black residents in Zamdela speak Sesotho.

SASOL’s presence has not only fueled the local economy but has also contributed to the development of Sasolburg’s infrastructure. The corporation’s sponsorship of projects such as an Olympic-sized swimming pool named after the renowned swimmer Penelope Heyns underscores its commitment to the community.

Over the years, Sasolburg has played a pivotal role in South Africa’s energy landscape. The initial pilot plant, established in the 1950s, paved the way for the expansion of oil-from-coal production. The political climate of the apartheid era further emphasized the importance of domestic fuel production, leading to the construction of additional plants in Secunda.

With its rich history, industrial significance, and ongoing commitment to innovation, Sasolburg remains a vital part of South Africa’s economic and social fabric.
